Chapter 14

Cooper

The next day was cloudy, and Cooper was sure another snowstorm was on the way. He drove Jon into Sandton, the small but wealthy nearby town, to visit the hardware store and introduced him to the manager. Jon did his very best to act like a handyman, but Cooper was privately entranced by how much Jon didn’t know about this kind of thing. But he was fascinated, and insisted on asking question after question. They got some planks cut for the dock, and bought everything on the list Stan had sent with them.

“Best get back soon,” the manager said, after helping them load up the Jeep. “Snow’s blowing back in tonight, they say, but you never know—might come early.”

“Let’s get out of here,” Jon said, eyes widening.

“Just one stop first,” Cooper said. He stopped off at the mall, where he bought a new phone for himself and a new charger for Jon’s phone. Jon insisted on paying him back for it.

Once they got back to the estate, they went out to the lake and replaced the planks on the dock, Jon managing to keep his feet this time, then restocked the propane canisters at each cabin, and ticked off a few more items on Stan’s list.

“Maybe we’ll get snowed in again,” Jon said hopefully. “And we won’t be able to make the dinner.”

“Maybe,” Cooper said, smiling.

But the skies stayed obstinately closed the rest of the afternoon. Cooper nervous-cleaned the cabin while Jon passed the time on his phone, catching up on what he called his ‘socials’, and when 7 o’clock rolled around, Jon headed to the shower with a sigh he didn’t realize Cooper overheard.

“You don’t have to do this. I can tell my mother that you’re not well, or that you still need some recovery time from the car accident.”

Jon paused in the doorway. “I just don’t have any appropriate clothes,” he said. “Your mom is pure class. I packed jeans, jeans, and more jeans.”

“You mean you don’t have a Valentino tux hidden away for emergencies?” Cooper grinned. “I’ll wear jeans, too. She can hardly expect anything else; we’re supposed to be on vacation.”

Privately, though, Cooper thought Jon had his mother pretty well pegged. She would note the jeans, and she wouldn’t say anything, but she would still somehow make her displeasure known. Cooper felt a spark of satisfaction at the idea. It would do his mother good to see that she couldn’t arrange every single thing in the world to her own liking.

The two of them drove up in the Jeep and arrived ten minutes early. Cooper was uncomfortable, noticing Jon’s quietness as they were received by a member of staff. Thank God they didn’t have a butler, Cooper thought, and then: I never in my life thought I’d be happy about something like that.

Then, thankfully, Janet Simmons came into the foyer to greet them. Cooper bent over to give her a warm hug. “How are you, Janet?”

“Very well indeed. It’s lovely to see you, sir, and we’re delighted to be able to meet your boyfriend.
